Hand-knotted carpets from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, are renowned for their intricate craftsmanship and deep historical roots tracing back to the Mughal era. The tradition began in the 16th century under Emperor Akbar, who invited Persian weavers to India to teach the art of carpet making. Local artisans in Mirzapur and nearby Bhadohi soon mastered the technique, blending Persian motifs with Indian aesthetics to create a unique Indo-Persian style. These carpets are distinguished by their fine knotting, vibrant colors, and elegant patterns such as jaal (net-like designs), kosi (geometric motifs), and scrolling floral vines.
Originally woven with wool, later versions incorporated silk and cotton, enhancing their texture and sheen. Over centuries, Mirzapur evolved into one of India’s premier carpet-weaving centers, celebrated worldwide for its exquisite artistry. Each Mirzapur hand-knotted carpet remains a testament to the enduring legacy of Mughal influence and India’s rich textile heritage.
