When we speak of the civilizational unity of Bharat, we often look at kings, empires, and political institutions. Yet, the true unifiers of our nation were the Sages and Rishis who transcended geography, language, and region. Among them, Sage Agathiyar stands as one of the greatest symbols of India’s cultural and spiritual unity. Revered in both the northern and southern traditions of Bharat, Sage Agathiyar Muni represents the seamless connection between the Himalayas and the Indian Ocean. When we think of Sage Agathiyar, what immediately comes to mind are the Podhigai Hills of Tamil Nadu and the River Kaveri. Those who have studied literature know him as the great sage who gave Tamil its grammar. We also regard him as the leader of the Tamil Sangam who nurtured and promoted the growth of the Tamil language. His life and legacy remind us that India’s unity is not a modern concept; it is an ancient civilizational reality nurtured by sages, saints, and seekers.

Sage Agathiyar is also revered as the author of several Tamil medical treatises. In the Ramayana, it is Sage Agathiyar who teaches Lord Rama the Aditya Hridayam, the sacred hymn that grants strength and victory. All these traditions stand as evidence that Bharat has always been united by a common civilizational vision. At this juncture, I am reminded of the achievements of the National AYUSH Mission launched by the Health Ministry under the visionary leadership of Shriman Narendra Modiji. In the last decade, over350 New Ayush Dispensaries have been established, over 1400 Ayush Grams have been supported, and over 12000 Ayush Health & Wellness Centres have been supported.

As we pay tribute to this great Sage Agrathiyar, let us draw inspiration from his example and recommit ourselves to the ideals of harmony, knowledge, and unity. Let us celebrate the rich diversity of our nation while cherishing the deeper bonds that make us one people, one civilization, and one Bharat.

    • Jai Hind!
    • Long Live Mother Bharat!
