    Sholapeeth

    Region: Bengal
Sholapeeth is a traditional and ancient handicraft from West Bengal, crafted by skilled artisans known as ‘Malakars.’ This art is created using the milky-white inner core of the Shola plant, a delicate material that is incredibly lightweight and resembles white sponge or foam. Artisans meticulously carve this material to create intricate idols of deities, ornate decorations for Durga Puja, and traditional bridal headgear known as ‘Topor.’ Due to its lustrous white finish and elegance, it is often called the “Ivory of Handicrafts,” as it closely mimics the appearance of real ivory. This eco-friendly craft remains a vital part of Bengal’s cultural heritage, symbolizing purity and artistic excellence.
