Kalamkari is an ancient art form that flourished in Andhra Pradesh, specifically centered in towns like Srikalahasti, renowned for its intricate hand-painted style, and Machilipatnam, famous for its detailed block-printing. The name itself is derived from the Persian words “kalam” (pen) and “kari” (craftsmanship), reflecting the precise work done with a bamboo pen on cloth. Traditionally, this craft depicts scenes from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, but it is perhaps equally world-renowned for its iconic “Tree of Life” motifs. These designs feature beautifully stylized flowers, creepers, birds, and animals, showcasing a sophisticated blend of Indian and Persian artistic influence.
