I touch and salute the holy feet of Bharat Mata – the Most Powerful and the Most Merciful. Bharat Mata ki jai!

On the occasion of the Goa State Day Celebrations, the dignitaries sharing the dais with me, Hon’ble Governor of Goa, Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju ji; Hon’ble Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant Ji; Hon’ble Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Naik Ji; Hon’ble Speaker of Goa State Assembly, Dr. Ganesh Gaunker Ji; Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, Shri Sadanand Tanawade Ji; Hon’ble Ministers, Government of Goa and Distinguished Guests on the Dais; and other dignitaries.

It is a privilege to join you all on this momentous occasion as we celebrate the 40thanniversary of Goa attaining statehood. This is my first official visit to Goa since assuming the office of the Vice-President of India and I am happy that it is on such a celebratory occasion. On 30 May 1987, Goa became the 25th state of India—a historic milestone that affirmed the unique identity, aspirations, and democratic spirit of its people.

Today, we gather to celebrate the remarkable journey of a land that has always stood at the confluence of heritage and progress, tradition and modernity, local pride and global outlook. I have been going through the Governor’s reports that Hon’ble Governor of Goa, Shri Pusapati ji has been sending. I am impressed by the development work and progress taking place in Goa as seen from those reports. I am also happy that on this momentous occasion we released commemorative stamp on Shri Mario Miranda and also felicitated and awarded eminent personalities and dignitaries who have been contributing not only to Goa’s progress but also to nation building.

Goa is far more than a destination of scenic beauty. It is a living civilization shaped by centuries of cultural exchange, intellectual openness, maritime enterprise, and social harmony. From its ancient temples and magnificent churches to its music, cuisine, literature, and festivals, Goa represents the very essence of India’s pluralistic spirit. Goa is also revered as the “Land of Parashurama,” a title deeply rooted in the civilisational and cultural ethos of our great Bharat. This sacred association is a reflection of Goa’s spiritual heritage and its timeless connection with nature, culture, and resilience.

The people of Goa have always demonstrated an admirable commitment to education, civic consciousness, and social inclusiveness. The warmth, friendliness, and generous spirit of its people, who welcome everyone with open hearts makes Goa truly special. It has deservingly emerged as a world-renowned tourist destination, admired for its natural beauty, vibrant culture and warm hospitality. The state’s achievements in literacy, healthcare, environmental awareness, and human development stand as examples for the nation.

Today, as we celebrate the proud occasion of Goa Statehood Day, we fondly recall Shri Manohar Parrikar ji — a visionary leader whose simplicity, integrity and dedication left a lasting mark on Goa’s progress. Under his leadership, Goa witnessed significant development in infrastructure, education and governance, while preserving its unique cultural identity. His deep connection with the people and his commitment to public service continue to inspire generations.

On this occasion I must also commend the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Goa, Shri Pramod Sawant ji, whose dedication and commitment continues to guide Goa towards progress and prosperity. Under his leadership, the state has witnessed remarkable strides in infrastructure, education, healthcare, tourism, and digital governance, while preserving Goa’s rich cultural heritage and unique identity. His inclusive and people-centric approach has strengthened public trust and inspired confidence among citizens across all sections of society. Shri Sawant’s unwavering focus on sustainable development and good governance truly reflects the spirit and aspirations of modern Goa.

Goa’s vibrant democracy and strong community institutions reflect a society that values participation, dialogue, and dignity. On this occasion, we also pay tribute to the countless individuals whose sacrifices and vision shaped Goa’s destiny. We remember the freedom fighters who struggled courageously for liberation, the leaders who safeguarded Goa’s identity, and the citizens whose determination paved the way for statehood. Their contributions continue to inspire future generations.

As India moves forward on the path toward Viksit Bharat—a developed, self-reliant and inclusive nation by 2047—Goa has a particularly important role to play. With its educated population, entrepreneurial spirit, strategic coastline, and global connectivity, Goa is uniquely positioned to contribute to India’s next phase of growth and innovation. In this journey, the Blue Economy will be one of the defining pillars of progress. Goa’s long maritime tradition gives it a natural advantage in areas such as sustainable tourism, fisheries, port-led development, marine biotechnology, coastal infrastructure, renewable ocean energy, and maritime services.

The future belongs to economies that can grow while preserving ecological balance, and Goa can emerge as a national model of sustainable coastal development. At the same time, development must remain balanced and inclusive. The preservation of Goa’s ecology, coastline, rivers, forests, and heritage is not merely a local responsibility—it is a national imperative. The world admires Goa not only for its beauty, but for the harmony between its people and nature Safeguarding that balance is essential for future generations.
The story of Goa reminds us that identity and progress can go hand in hand. One can embrace modernity without losing cultural roots. One can welcome the world while preserving local traditions. In many ways, Goa offers an inspiring model for a rapidly changing world.
To the youth of Goa, I say this: your state’s greatest strength lies in your creativity, openness, and confidence. Whether in entrepreneurship, science, arts, sports, public service, innovation, or the emerging sectors of the Blue Economy, you carry forward a legacy that is both proud and progressive. The future of Goa will be shaped by your imagination and leadership.

As we celebrate this Statehood Day, let us renew our collective commitment to unity, prosperity, sustainability, and social harmony. Let us work together to build a Goa that remains vibrant in culture, strong in economy, compassionate in society, and secure in its future—an important partner in the national vision of Viksit Bharat. May Goa continue to shine as a beacon of peace, hospitality, innovation, and excellence. On this joyous occasion, I extend my heartfelt greetings to every Goan across India and around the world.

    • Long Live Mother Bharat!
