I convey my warm greetings and good wishes to the people of our country on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation – Mahatma Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi is one of the tallest, most influential leaders to have ever walked the earth. He was a beacon of light for the oppressed in the 20th century and continues to be one even today, 72 years after his demise. Mahatma Gandhi showed the world a novel mode of struggle against injustice, a novel way of life through his message of Truth and Non-violence and left an ever-lasting imprint on humanity.

He modeled his efforts to liberate India from colonial rule on the values of Truth (Satyagraha) and Non-Violence (Ahimsa). He inspired great leaders and landmark struggles for self-determination and human rights all over the world. His name became a mantra for those who struggled peacefully against injustice and atrocities.

The Mahatma had an unshakeable faith in the innate goodness of humanity; a faith eloquently expressed in his long-held belief that there are no evil people, only evil deeds.

Today, we live in a world that is being torn apart by terrorism, warfare and heinous crimes. Today, we need Mahatma Gandhi, who said “You must not lose faith in humanity, humanity is an ocean. If a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty”, more than ever before, to reaffirm our faith in humanity.

His principles will continue to guide us in our shared quest for world peace, harmony, universal brotherhood, sustainable and inclusive development and self-reliance.
